Variations on a Dream:
Black History, Liberation & Spirituality

Art, Literature, Film and Music celebrating African-American History Month at Bellamy Road. January 28, 2012 – March 4

Saturday January 28, 2012. Opening reception for artists 7-10 pm with musical interludes by vocalist Johnnie Phillips

Author and historian, Carolyn Cohens is a self-taught artist from Chiefland, Florida. Her artworks celebrate the folk-life of African-Americans in Levy County and the surrounding region. In three series of acrylic paintings she depicts turpentining, spirituality, and the lives of individuals who carry the rich cultural traditions of her community.

Adrian Rhodes’ large acrylic/mixed media works reflect a liberationist theology and deep understanding of the socio-cultural context of modern Afro-American life. A Gainesville native and current resident, he has studied, worked and shown his artworks in New York and Jacksonville among other places.
