Saturday February 20, 2010 Gunther Maier - Filmmaker, Rudy Sena - Cowboy/Actor
Gunther began his photography career in Germany before moving to New York where he created many major television commercials for Mercedes-Benz, Siemens and others. A documentary filmmaker, Gunther will screen his 2008 Santa Fe Film Festival entry, Rodeo de Galisteo. The subject of the film is cowboy Rudy Sena, who carries on a five-generation family tradition of hosting annual rodeos at his ranch in the village of Galisteo, New Mexico. He is also an actor in numerous Hollywood Westerns, playing bad guy bit parts by getting killed off in the first five minutes of the movie. March 21, 2009 Christopher Felver has spent three decades photographically documenting the lives of Beat figures and is also a published author and noted filmmaker. At Bellamy Road he shows photographs, Beat memorabilia, three short films and a preview of his latest, a documentary on the life of Beat publisher Lawrence Ferlinghetti, which premieres at the San Francisco Film Festival in April. Chris’ photographic exhibitions have appeared around the world; his latest book Beat was published in 2007. He lives in Sausalito, California when not on the road.

February 7 Kristy Andersen, producer/writer of Zora Neale Hurston; Jump at the Sun -- appeared Saturday 6:30 – 9 p.m.
Kristy Andersen delivered a talk and screening of Zora Neale Hurston: Jump at the Sun, a PBS American Masters biography with rare footage of Zora, ‘Godmother’ of modern African-American literature. Zora (1891-1960) grew up in Eatonville, Florida and died in Fort Pierce, penniless and forgotten after a brilliant career as novelist, anthropologist, and raconteur. The inspiration for many contemporary African-American writers, her fascinating life was documented by writer Kristy Andersen, with rare footage from her own collection. and by dramatic recreations of a 1943 archival radio interview directed by Sam Pollard. Author of Their Eyes Were Watching God and other novels, Zora also wrote an autobiography (Dust Tracks on a Road), and collected folklore (Mules and Men)

Saturday, November 22 Bellamy Road screened The Yearling (1994), based on the novel by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Producer of the made-for-TV movie (CBS/Hallmark), Sandra Birnhak spoke about the film, which included a five minute segment of rare footage (1938-1945) of Marjorie.
Sandra Birnhak is director of The Foundation for Antarctic Research in New York. She recently retired from the movie business and moved to Palatka, where she lives on a farm and plans to write and collect local oral histories for publication.

Saturday, November 8 Bellamy Road screened Gal Young Un (1979), based on a short story about backwoods moonshiners by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Producer Sam Gowan and director Victor Nunez screened the world premiere of the newly restored version of her O. Henry Award winning story published in 1932. They discussed Rawlings as chronicler of Florida’s cracker culture and answered questions about the film.
Victor Nunez is a film director and professor at Florida State University. A graduate of UCLA Film School, Gal Young Un was his first feature length film. He is best known for directing Ulee’s Gold, a highly-acclaimed 1997 release starring Peter Fonda, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance.

Samuel C. Gowan, 68, died May 5, 2009 at home in Gainesville, Florida. Born in Jersey City, NJ, Sam came to Gainesville in 1965 to go to graduate school at UF and spent 30 years as the Associate Director of Collections at the UF Libraries. As a partner in Nunez-Gowan Productions, Sam is associated with such films as Gal Young Un, Ulee’s Gold, and Coastlines.

November 14, 2008 Alan Saperstein screened his video Florida Scenes, celebrating the natural beauty of north central Florida. His video of seven short subjects will be followed by a bonfire and concert by Dim Lights. A reception was held and hors d’ oeuvres and beverages were served
